Kinder Island’s founder and educator, Sabina Veronelli, believes that, as the latest research in neuroscience confirms, a strong sense of connection between children, their parents and educators lies at the core of their well-being and at the base of emotional, social and academic learning. Therefore she creates a nurturing connection with children on a daily basis.
“When children feel connected they feel safe, they can think well, learn, engage with other children, be co-operative, play and express themselves. Providing children with a space where they can feel safe to be themselves is of the utmost importance.” Sabina says.
Play-based Learning
The curriculum, routine and activities, designed in accordance with the Early Years Learning Framework, engage children’s intrinsic motivation, interests and curiosity, presenting “invitations to play” which provide a wealth of opportunities for open-end, creative, child-led playing and learning.
“Every child is unique, competent and creative and I aim to provide a nurturing environment for their natural talent to grow”, says Sabina, who studied Pedagogy in Italy. She has also been inspired by the Montessori and Reggio Emilia educational approaches, and by the research on creativity she carried out for her thesis.
“I studied educational approaches, methods, techniques and experiences aimed at fostering creativity”, adds Sabina. “A non-judgemental and playful environment, characterised by positive communication, is a prerequisite for creativity to blossom. Then the trick lies in welcoming, modelling and encouraging exploration, imagination, creative thinking and problem solving”.
Kinder Island Community Support for Families
Kinder Island Family Day Care is the first step in a bigger project, aimed at building community and support for local families.
“You know, it would be awesome to have a community of like-minded people to raise a child within, the famous ‘village’. And most of us parents not only make do without a village, we have to make do without an extended family, we have to make do virtually with no help at all. Parenting is hard work and it is extremely precious, since the relationship we have with our children moulds who they are at such an extent. Parents need and deserve support. I would love for Kinder Island to become the first step of a bigger project, aimed at creating a ‘village’ for parents living in the South West of Brisbane”.
